First three Mvts. from Symphony No. 3, arr. for one player alternating between Sopranino, Soprano at old & modern pitch, Alto at old & modern pitch, and in G, Tenor & Bass

The epochal 1st mvt. lasts over 30 minutes, longer by itself than a great many full symphonies. The main theme of the 3rd mvt. is based on Mahler's song “Ablösung im Sommer.” (Replacement in Summer) from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn). Note that we offer an arrangement of the first of the famous “Posthorn” episodes from this movement for bass recorder and keyboard. These arrangements of symphonies, of Mahler in particular, are especially for folks who know the movements from which they are taken, so that the context can come to mind while playing—but they will also be great at introducing people to these works. They keep very close to the original register, but may profitably be run through in at least three different ways: 1. using just one recorder, changing between F and C fingering, 2. going through with each required size, 1st playing all the soprano sections, then alto, etc., or 3. switching as indicated in the scores.
